Artist's Comments

This was the final piece I did for my glass slumping and fusing class. It measures about six inches square.

I started out with a layer of textured iridized glass covered by a layer of clear. Then on top of that I lay down thin layers of frit powder. After that was fused, I masked and sand blasted away the design. Then I fired it again to fire polish the sand blasted areas.

So you sand blasted and then fired the piece again- what does that do?

when you sand blast glass, it gives it a frosted look since you're essentially roughing up the surface (sort of like etched glass). if you fire it again, the glass melts a bit to smooth out the rough surface turning it transparent again. That's called fire polishing.

If I didn't do that, the deep carved areas would have a matte/frosted look.
