Okay, I'm usually not one for fan art, but ever since I visited the Shepard Fairey exhibit at the ICA in Boston, I've been playing around with making stencils. Really, when you look at Fairey's "OBEY" work, and how it's been parodied/applied to pretty much anyone and anything, doing this was a logical progression.
The actual Lelouch image is a stencil that I cut out on a 8.5"x11" piece of card stock. I then scanned that stencil with a black backing so I could get a digital version of the stencil image to play around with digitally. I created the backgrounds and the lettering digitally just to play around. There was also a little bit of digital painting.
This is really just a test image for me to play around with. Basically, I've been looking for interesting things to practice my stencil creation skills. I plan on doing some original physical pieces with the stencil which I might end up putting into the Otakon art show if I manage to get them done in time.
It's was a bit strange for me to work on this. I don't usually get a lot of satisfaction working on fan art because I usually feel strange working with other people's creations and incorporating them into pieces of my own. However, seeing the Shepard Fairey exhibit gave me a lot of insight into the realm of derivative works. It gave me a whole new point of view in recognizing that there are many ways to express your own vision while making a derivative. I think I managed to put my own spin on both the Code Geass series and Shepard Fairey's concepts. Even if I didn't, I had a lot of fun doing this, so at the very least, it's was play time for me.
